NEC Says Commune Elections Likely for June 2017

National Election Committee (NEC) Secretary-General Tep Nytha said on Thursday that next year’s crucial commune council elections would likely be held in June but that the decision must ultimately come from the government.

The NEC came under fire earlier this month for its repeated delays in starting to rebuild the nation’s voter rosters, with one official saying the process that was meant to start at the beginning of this year may now start as late as September.

Mr. Nytha said on Thursday that there was still no hard schedule in place due to delays in getting voter registration equipment from Europe, but indicated that even such a late date to start registration would not be a problem.

“In accordance with the law, the government will announce the election date nine months in advance at the most before the election day, so at this stage, the election date will be in June 2017,” Mr. Nytha said.

The secretary-general added that the cost of voter registration and running the 2017 commune elections was estimated at $52.6 million.
