National Election Committee Mulls CNRP Voter Registration Request

The National Election Committee (NEC) will consider a request from the opposition CNRP to register voters during the upcoming Pchum Ben holiday, but it is not sympathetic to the idea, NEC spokesman Hang Puthea said on Wednesday.

Next month, the election committee will start a complete rebuild of the voter list—one of the key reforms pledged after the 2013 election—amid concerns that migrant workers and others could be disenfranchised by not being available to register.

On Tuesday, the CNRP sent a letter to the NEC stating the Pchum Ben holiday—from September 30 to October 3 this year—would be the ideal time to register voters, as most people will return to their home villages.

However, Mr. Puthea said it could be impractical. “Pchum Ben is a national holiday for which all the people get holidays, and registration officials legally also have to get holidays,” he said.

“So should we ask them to work or not?” Nevertheless, he said the request would be put to the NEC’s board.
