NEC Delegation to Visit Jailed Senior Official On Thursday

National Election Committee (NEC) vice chairman Kuoy Bunroeun will lead a delegation of election officials to visit the body’s jailed deputy secretary-general Ny Chakrya this morning, committee spokesman Hang Puthea said on Wednesday.

It will be the first time the courts have allowed NEC officials to visit Mr. Chakrya since he was charged and jailed early last month.

“There will be His Excellency Kuoy Bunroeun, myself and His Excellency Duch Son, along with four NEC legal experts, visiting him tomorrow,” Mr. Puthea said.

The spokesman declined to comment on whether they would discuss Mr. Chakrya’s legal situation.

Mr. Chakrya stands charged with “bribing a witness” for his alleged role in delivering money to deputy opposition leader Kem Sokha’s supposed mistress.

Asked whether Mr. Chakrya would be able to fulfill his duties for the NEC while awaiting trial behind bars, Mr. Puthea said no.

“It’s impossible, and frankly speaking he would not feel like doing work either,” he said.
