Murdered Sex Worker’s Body Discovered in Pond

Police launched a murder investigation on Sunday after the body of a young sex worker was dumped in a pond in Phnom Penh’s Pur Senchey district, officials said.

The body of Buth Sokleang, 23, a known sex worker, was found by a villager who waded into the water in Choam Chao commune looking for vegetables to sell at about 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, said Theng Kosal, commune police chief.

She appeared to have been strangled to death and thrown in the water, he added.

Police believe that Buth Sokleang, who was known as “Mom,” might have been killed two days earlier due to the appearance of her swollen body, Mr. Kosal said.

Ruling out a motive of robbery, he said police were following a theory that Buth Sokleang was murdered because she refused to have sex with a group of men.
