Military police tracked down and arrested a rice farmer accused of fatally attacking his neighbor in a fit of jealousy and will send him to the Kampot Provincial Court today, an official said.
Chey Bunthoeurn, 38, attacked 48-year-old rice farmer Sao Chanorn with an ax as the victim left the home of Mr. Bunthoeurn’s ex-wife in Banteay Meas district’s Samraong Loeu commune on Wednesday, deputy provincial military police commander Hem Chandara said.
Mr. Bunthoeurn then fled to a patch of jungle behind his nearby home, Mr. Chandara said.
Eight military police officials were deployed to search for the suspect soon after commune police were alerted to the murder by villagers who found the victim’s body lying in the street.
“He went into hiding in the jungle behind his house…so we searched the jungle and we found him there” at about 11 a.m. on Thursday, he said.
The suspect admitted to murdering the victim after becoming jealous of the romantic relationship between the man and his ex-wife.
He was detained overnight at the provincial military police headquarters pending his court appearance.
