Police on Thursday were seeking a married father suspected of strangling his girlfriend in the couple’s rented room in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district, officials said.
Mort Borey, a 26-year-old singer, was strangled sometime before 5 p.m. on Wednesday in Stung Meanchey commune’s Russey village, commune police chief Mao Savoeun said.
Mort Borey’s boyfriend, whom a neighbor saw leaving the room to buy food at about 5 p.m., was the primary suspect in the woman’s death, said Samrith Kunthy, deputy chief of the district’s serious crimes bureau.
“She died from strangulation. There were marks found on her neck,” Mr. Kunthy said.
The identity of Mort Borey’s boyfriend was unknown, although her relatives told police he was a married father of three with multiple nicknames, he said.
The victim’s sister, Mort Sarin, 32, said she filed a complaint with police after the landlord found the body and alerted her.
Ms. Sarin said her sister’s boyfriend had a wife and three children in Kompong Speu province.
