Man Charged Over Council of Ministers Fraud

A 28-year-old man accused of pretending to be an official from the Council of Ministers and the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) in a bid to collect money from members of the public was charged on Monday with fraud, a court official said.

Ly Sophana, spokesman for the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, confirmed Sar Moeun Dara was charged with fraud with aggravating circumstances, but declined to comment further.

The government-aligned Fresh News quoted Kheang Seng, deputy director of the ACU, as saying Mr. Moeun Dara was detained in Kratie province.

He had allegedly been claiming to be an official to demand payments from people.

If found guilty, Mr. Moeun Dara faces two to five years in prison.

ACU director Om Yentieng could not be reached for comment.
