A man was beaten to death by a mob in Prey Veng province on Sunday after fighting with the grandson of a local village chief, and four suspects were arrested, authorities said on Monday.
Seng Roatthy, 33, was killed in front of his home in Peamro district’s Nak Loeung commune at about 9:30 p.m., commune chief Phouk Sary said.
According to witnesses, Seng Roatthy approached the grandson of the chief of Village 6 in neighboring Prek Khsay Khor commune outside a cigarette shop near his house and the two began arguing, Mr. Sary said.
When the confrontation escalated, Seng Roatthy pushed the grandson into a drainage ditch, prompting the grandson to summon about 20 of his friends, who chased Seng Roatthy back toward his house, he said.
There, they “beat the victim together in front of his home until he died,” the commune chief said. “We found evidence, including planks of wood and a crowbar, at the scene, and the victim had been seriously beaten above his nose and on other parts of his body,” he added.
Nak Loeung commune police chief Chin Sophal said four men were arrested and were being held while investigators searched for other suspects.
Asked to identify the village chief’s grandson—who witnesses accused of instigating and participating in the fatal assault—both the commune chief and commune police chief said their telephones were running out of battery and hung up.
