Man Arrested for Murder, Rape of Vietnamese Girl

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Takeo province on Sunday for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old Vietnamese girl in Phnom Penh last month, police said on Monday.

The body of Vietnamese national Chuob Sreypov, a resident of Prey Veng province who had been visiting the capital to sell flowers, was found floating near a riverbank behind the Chak Angre Krom pagoda in Meanchey district on February 7.

Huor Mengvang, deputy Meanchey district police chief, said the suspect, Dang Yang Do—who lived about 20 meters from the scene of the crime—was detained in Takeo province’s Kiri Vong district at around 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Under questioning, the suspect admitted to raping and killing the girl after a day of heavy drinking, he said.

“The suspect saw the victim walk to a quiet place and then grabbed the victim’s neck and committed his activities…. The suspect admitted that he choked the victim and then raped her,” he said, adding that the man would be sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court today to face charges.
