Man Allegedly Strangles Wife in Preah Sihanouk

A 53-year-old construction worker was arrested for allegedly strangling his wife to death in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prey Nop district after she refused to have sex with him early on Thursday morning, an official said.

Vok Sarath had been drinking all day before returning home at around midnight, according to Hour Yai, police chief in Boeng Ta Prohm commune.

“The suspect was very drunk and he wanted to have sex with his wife but she refused,” he said.

Mr. Sarath attempted to rape his wife, and his young daughter ran to tell police after seeing him strangle her mother, Mr. Yai said.

The suspect grabbed a machete and fled to the brush behind his house before police arrived at the premises and remained in a stand-off with commune police until eventually letting his guard down at 4:30 a.m., he said.

“When the commune chief talked with him, he seemed to calm down, then our police came from behind and pushed him to the ground,” he said.

Kol Phally, deputy provincial police chief, said Mr. Sarath was still being questioned by police on Thursday and would be sent to the court today.
