A man who was arrested in Kompong Speu province on Wednesday for fatally stabbing another man after a funeral the night before told police he thought he had killed a ghost, an official said.
Se Sim, 55, was arrested in Baset district at about 1 a.m. after repeatedly stabbing Preap Houn, 77, with a small pair of scissors, according to district police chief Yang Sokly.
The victim died of his wounds while being transported from a private clinic to the Takeo provincial referral hospital.
On Tuesday night, the suspect and the victim shared a bed at the home of the family hosting the funeral—relatives of Preap Houn—and stayed up late, talking and joking together, said commune police chief Kheauv Chheth.
Later, Mr. Sim was seen dragging Preap Houn’s body into the road outside the house, he said. Sok Phach, a commune police officer, said Mr. Sim had been mentally unstable since his wife died two years ago and had previously been accused of unprovoked attacks on villagers.
Mr. Sim confessed to the murder under questioning on Wednesday afternoon but said he had merely slain a ghost, according to deputy provincial police chief Som Bora.
