A Malaysian casino worker who was arrested in Phnom Penh on Saturday morning following a drunken hit-and-run that left a motorbike courier dead was released on bail Tuesday, police said on Wednesday.
Tin Vansy, deputy municipal traffic police chief, said the Malaysian man—whose name he said he could not remember—was released on bail after the victim’s family agreed to withdraw their complaint against him in exchange for compensation.
“He was released on bail on Wednesday evening when his lawyer paid bail at the court and the victim’s side agreed to withdraw the lawsuit,” Mr. Vansy said. “The victim’s side also agreed on the amount of compensation, but I don’t know how much.”
The Malaysian man, who worked at NagaWorld casino, was driving his Lexus through Chamkar Mon district at about 3:40 a.m. when he hit the motorbike driver pulling a trailer, police said.
The victim, who was traveling to the Deum Kor market to collect vegetables, died immediately at the scene of the accident, police said, while the Lexus driver was arrested about 20 minutes later after he fled the scene.
