Last Body Recovered From Overturned Kandal Ferry

The body of a 2-year-old girl was found on Friday inside a ferry that capsized during a storm in Kandal province on Wednesday, bringing an end to the search for victims of the accident.

“We found the 2-year-old girl after we lifted the ferry out of the water. She was stuck inside the engine room of the ferry,” said Bun Theng, governor of Lvea Em district, where the ferry sank in the Mekong River.

A 61-year-old man also drowned. Six other passengers were rescued by locals, who rushed to the scene in boats, while the driver of the ferry escaped before authorities arrived.

The ferry was blown over by gusting winds that swept across southern Cambodia along with torrential rains at about midday on Wednesday.

District police chief Chea Thol said his officers were still investigating the case.

“Now we are collecting information to file a report,” he said, adding that the case could make its way to the provincial court “soon.”

Police suggested last week that criminal charges against the boat driver or owner were unlikely as the event was accidental.
