Laotian Meth Smugglers Nabbed in Stung Treng City

Two Laotian nationals were caught smuggling just under a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine into Stung Treng province on Thursday morning, police said.

Songkang Vengsai, 32, and Hav Bunmimany, 33, were apprehended near National Road 7 in Stung Treng City’s Samakki commune at around 7 a.m. after trekking through the forest from Laos, according to Son Nimol, chief of the provincial police’s anti-drug bureau.

“A spy reported to our police,” he said, adding that the tip-off led his officers directly to the suspects, who initially tried to flee but stopped when police fired automatic weapons into the air.

“When we arrested them, we found 999.995 grams of white methamphetamine in a plastic bag,” he said, adding that the suspects would be sent to the Stung Treng Provincial Court today for questioning.

Nineteen people have been arrested in Stung Treng for drug trafficking so far this year, according to Mr. Nimol.
