The Kandal Provincial Court on Friday laid charges against a 22-year-old moto-taxi driver who was arrested in Phnom Penh after kidnapping a 10-year-old boy and holding him ransom, an official said.
The child has since been returned to his parents in Kandal’s Ponhea Leu district, while his abductor, Sous Vanou, faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty of unlawful confinement with aggravating circumstances, according to Tep Monin, a deputy prosecutor at the provincial court.
“The investigating judge decided this afternoon to send him to the provincial prison for pretrial detention,” Mr. Monin said.
Military police apprehended Mr. Vanou in Phnom Penh’s Dangkao district on Wednesday when he came to collect a 2 million riel (about $500) ransom the boy’s parents had sent him via the mobile payment service Wing, after receiving a payment in the same amount earlier in the day.
The boy was rescued in the same operation.
