Head-On Collision Kills Three Friends

A Toyota SUV veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a van carrying vegetables on National Road 6 in Kompong Thom province on Monday night, killing the SUV driver and two of his friends, police said on Tuesday.

The RAV4 crashed into the SsangYong van in Stong district’s Trea commune at about 11:15 p.m., according to deputy district police chief Tang Chhang Noeun.

Both vehicles rolled over and the Toyota burst into flames, Mr. Chhang Noeun said. The driver of the van, who was transporting vegetables from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap province, fled the scene, he added.

“The Toyota RAV4 flipped upside down and caught fire, but we do not know whether the driver and passengers died in the crash or in the fire,” Mr. Chhang Noeun said.

He identified the victims as Kouch Bun Huy, 35, Muon Vin, 28, and Samnang, 27—all friends—but said it was unclear who was driving at the time of the crash.

A third passenger, Ye Rotha, 24, was injured seriously and rushed to Phnom Penh’s Calmette Hospital, he said.
