Half a Million Voters Registered by Weekend

National Election Committee (NEC) spokesman Hang Puthea said on Sunday that about 540,000 of the country’s estimated 10 million eligible voters had been registered onto the new voter list as of midday, the fourth day of the three-month registration period.

“In general, the registration ran very smoothly and the speed has been faster than before, as the officials are more skillful in using the system, and we have technical teams ready to solve technical problems,” Mr. Puthea said.

“Regarding irregularities, there’s nothing remarkable besides small disturbances among registration officials while using the systems like computers, and people seem happy that the NEC has decided to do registration during one day of Pchum Ben.”

About 1 million Cambodians are estimated to live and work in Thailand, and lawmakers from the opposition CNRP last month asked the NEC to continue registration throughout the Pchum Ben holiday at the end of this month, when most Cambodians return to their home villages.

Voters who do not register during the current three-month period will not be eligible to vote in the June 2017 commune council elections.
