Government Repatriates More Maids From Malaysia

Four Cambodian women who claim they were tricked into taking grueling domestic jobs in Malaysia and two others who were jailed for passport violations are being repatriated this month after seeking help from the Cambodian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the Foreign Affairs Ministry announced on Monday.

Em Sun, 29, of Kampot province, Kheam Sam, 41, of Kompong Thom province, and Ros Mithona, 28, and Khoem Sroeun, 32, both of Kompong Cham province, told officials they had been “cheated by a ringleader” when they moved to Malaysia at different times in 2014 and last year, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said, however, that the embassy’s report did not include allegations of trafficking or abuse.

Of the two other women, Hoeun Sok La, 28, of Tbong Khmum province, was imprisoned at the Lenggeng immigration detention center in February when her passport expired, and Sok Kha, 18, of Kompong Cham province, was detained at the Juru detention center in July for not having a passport.
