Government Official Arrested Over Possible Pagoda Fraud

Kampot military police arrested an undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Cults and Religion on Wednesday morning for “breach of trust,” deputy provincial military police commander Hem Chandara said on Thursday.

An arrest warrant for Neak Sambor, 30, was issued last year, but police had been unable to locate him because they did not know where he worked or lived, or any details about the case or complainant, Mr. Chandara said.

“A plaintiff filed a complaint to the court, but we’re not sure who they are,” he said.

“We don’t know the details of the case.”

Seng Somony, a spokesman for the Ministry of Cults and Religion, said he had heard that the warrant was issued after Mr. Sambor failed to pay a construction company about $20,000 for building materials for a local pagoda, but that ministry officials were still investigating.

Mr. Sambor was questioned in the provincial court on Thursday and is now being detained at the provincial prison.
