A series of short films shot by Cambodian garment workers will be screened in London on Sunday to draw attention to the challenging conditions under which some of the clothes sold on U.K.’s high streets are made.
Europe has become the largest market for Cambodia’s garment exports in recent years, thanks in part to orders from U.K. brands.
But labor rights groups say the companies are not paying enough for those goods to provide Cambodia’s garment workers a living wage and safe working conditions.
The films, each between one and three minutes long, were shot by workers in a citizen journalists group that local labor rights group Central started in June.
U.K. film company Rainbow Collective helped mentor the workers, while the group Labour Behind the Label helped support the project.
“With powerful stories and evidence like this we can hold brands to account for conditions and pay in their factories and support the fair demands of the people, most of them women, who make our clothes,” said Label’s campaign manager Nicola Round in a statement.
The films will be screened at London’s Platform Theater.
