Friends organizing slain political analyst Kem Ley’s funeral procession pushed back plans to convey his body from Phnom Penh to his hometown in Takeo province on Sunday and have yet to set a new date.
Tim Malay, one of the organizers, said the procession would take place no later than the coming Sunday.
He said Sunday’s event was postponed because of popular demand from those who still wanted to pay their respects at Wat Chas pagoda, where to Kem Ley’s body is on display, and because the organizers wanted more time to make preparations, including for his final resting place.
City Hall spokesman Mean Chanyada said the municipal government had approved the organizers’ original request for a procession through the city on Sunday and that it was open to considering another date.
A well-known political commentator and government critic, Kem Ley, 46, was gunned down inside a convenience store in central Phnom Penh on July 10.
A man arrested for the murder said he killed Kem Ley over an unpaid debt, but many have claimed it was a government-ordered hit.
