A former police official and member of the Cambodian Freedom Fighters (CFF) was charged with drug trafficking alongside two associates on Thursday afternoon, court officials said on Friday.
A prosecutor and investigating judge at the Kampot Provincial Court questioned all three suspects, who had been arrested by Kompong Trach district police on Tuesday, and concluded that they were drug traffickers, said Man Boreth, a court spokesman.
The men were sent to the Kampot Provincial Prison to await trial, Mr. Boreth said.
The three suspects were identified earlier in the week as Ma Soben, 61, a former first deputy provincial police chief in Stung Treng province who was released from prison in December after serving 15 years over his membership in the CFF; Noun Sreynam, 60; and Kuoy Tith, 29.
A CFF attack in Phnom Penh on November 24, 2000, killed eight people and led to 200 arrests.
Two police officials in Stung Treng—provincial police chief Mao Dara and his deputy, In Chiva—declined to comment on Mr. Soben’s past.
