Four Military Police Under Investigation for Accepting Bribes

A Poipet City deputy military police commander and three of his officers were questioned at the Banteay Meanchey provincial military police station on Saturday after they allegedly took bribes from three suspected thieves in exchange for releasing them from custody, provincial military police commander Or Borin said on Monday.

Mr. Borin identified the city’s deputy commander as Tem Bola, but declined to name the officers or other suspects.

The alleged thieves were arrested by city military police officers, released and later rearrested by provincial military police on Friday evening.

They were accused of taking a Cambodian woman’s bag containing 550,000 baht, or about $15,600, from her unlocked parked car near the Thai border, said Soum Chankea, provincial coordinator for rights group Adhoc.

Mr. Borin said the alleged thieves were sent to the provincial court on Monday.

He said that if Mr. Bola “was involved and is found to have committed the crime of abetting and releasing, he will be jailed according to the law.”

The three officers under Mr. Bola told officials he had ordered them to take bribes from the alleged thieves and let them go, Mr. Borin added.
