Former Court Director Struck From Judge List

Ang Mealaktei, the former director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court who was jailed and later released after giving his son a confiscated Audi SUV, has been struck from the country’s list of judges, according to a royal decree obtained on Monday.

Sam Pracheameanith, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of the Magistracy, which appoints, oversees and disciplines the country’s judges, said on Tuesday that Mr. Mealaktei’s guilty verdict prevented him from serving as a judge.

Mr. Mealaktei was freed from the Kandal Provincial Prison in February after serving 18 months of the two-year prison term he received in February last year.

Though the former judge was plagued by allegations of corruption, he ultimately dodged embezzlement charges after the court reasoned that the SUV was still in good condition when it was returned to the state.

Mr. Mealaktei’s sentence was reduced by six months in November as part of a series of royal pardons to mark the Water Festival.
