Five Questioned After Corpse Dug Up, Burned

A woman told by a fortune-teller that a dead relative was to blame for her illness was arrested by police along with four men after the corpse was dug up and burned in Kompong Chhnang province, police said.

Boribor district police chief Cheang Sovannarith said the children of Ky Yuklang had complained that their mother’s body was removed from the grave in which she had been buried about nine years before.

He said Deab Vuochlay was told by a fortune-teller that the corpse was making her sick.

“She believed in the superstition and decided to dig it up” and offered priest Pe Khom $100 to help, Mr. Sovannarith said.

Deputy district police chief Pen Sophary named the five arrested on Thursday and Friday as Ms. Vuochlay, 60; Mr. Khom, 70; Thuon Him, 42; Khy Sopheak, 25; and Khy Kunthea, 28.

Ms. Vuochlay had asked the family of Ky Yuklang in 2015 to dig up the body but was refused, Mr. Sophary added.

Long Sitha, provincial deputy prosecutor, said all five were released on Saturday after the plaintiffs withdrew their complaint.
