Five men accused of gang-raping a 22-year-old woman at a mango farm near a Kandal province high school have been charged with aggravated rape, officials said.
The victim’s boyfriend Rat Rotha, 20, Sopheap Chhlonh, 18, and three teenage boys aged 16 and 17 took turns raping the woman on Monday night until she lost consciousness, Sa’ang district police chief Seng Socheat said.
The suspects were planning to drop the unconscious woman at her home when they were arrested while attempting to cross a river by ferry, police said.
They were questioned by district police on Tuesday morning and at the Kandal Provincial Court on Wednesday, and were then charged with aggravated rape by Investigating Judge Phoung Vann, court spokesman So Sarin said.
“The court finished questioning and charged them with rape with aggravating circumstances and detained them in prison,” he said. Authorities said the woman’s boyfriend arranged the assault because he believed the woman had cheated on him.
Mr. Socheat said he had encouraged the victim, who returned home on Tuesday from a private clinic, to seek help from an NGO.
