‘F’-Rated Official Sworn In as New Telecoms Minister

In the final ceremony to mark changeovers in ministers following the National Assembly’s approval of a cabinet reshuffle on Monday, the erstwhile Transport Minister Tram Iv Tek on Thursday was handed control of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications from Prak Sokhonn, the former telecommunications minister, who has just become the minister of foreign affairs.

Defense Minister Tea Banh presided over the ceremony, telling Mr. Iv Tek, whom Prime Minister Hun Sen awarded a grade of “F” for his time in charge of transport, to continue to reform his new ministry.

“Please, new minister, continue this job and strengthen [the ministry] with the officials, because the new reforms need to be successful,” he said.

Mr. Iv Tek, for his part, committed to turning over a new leaf and improving the Telecommunications Ministry, which has come under fire for a controversial new telecoms law.

“I hope when I’m here the work will change or become better,” Mr. Iv Tek said.
