Eight Top Police Generals Slated for Retirement

Interior Minister Sar Kheng wrote a letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday requesting he approve the retirement of eight high-ranking police generals.

Among the eight, who all hold positions as secretaries of state at the ministry, are ruling party stalwarts Teng Savong, who was once secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, and Em Sam An, a member of the CPP’s central committee, according to the letter signed by Mr. Kheng.

“Please, Samdech Prime Minister [Hun Sen], examine and decide on it,” Mr. Kheng wrote.

“They have already reached the retirement age, so they will become retired generals.”

General Sam An held a police serial ID number 001; however, ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak on Tuesday played down the significance of the number, stating that he was not the first police official but simply “a top guy.”

Despite reaching the age of retirement, all will retain their positions at the ministry, he added.
