Deputy Preah Sihanouk provincial police chief Pen Dara is facing disciplinary action—but not arrest—for firing his gun outside a disco and restaurant in Sihanoukville’s Bei commune over the weekend, his boss, provincial police chief Chuon Narin, said on Thursday.
Mr. Dara, who heads the health, promotion and education bureau, fired his gun outside Seven at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, Mr. Narin said.
He would not say why Mr. Dara had fired his gun, how many times the deputy chief fired his weapon or where he had pointed it.
“I am still implementing the measure of the law on the discipline of police forces, so I cannot elaborate,” the police chief said.
The 1995 law on police discipline states that “a police officer shall not shoot without an order, except in case of legitimate self-defense or in case of emergency to protect human lives or private property.”
Mr. Dara would not be arrested, Mr. Narin said, but would have to face the appropriate penalties.
