Cuffed Suspects Escape Police Car En Route to Court

Two suspected bag snatchers, who had been handcuffed together, escaped from a police car on Tuesday while being driven to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning, though one of them has since been recaptured, police said.

Two police officers were driving four suspects to the court on Tuesday morning when a traffic jam along Monireth Boulevard forced them to stop, said Chhim Bun Rath, deputy Dangkao district police chief.

It was at that point that two men managed to dash out of the car, he said.

“We do not know how they unlocked the handcuffs,” Mr. Bun Rath said.

One suspect, Neang Roang, 23, who was quickly rearrested, was able to remove his handcuff completely, while the other, Thy Sovandy, 18, escaped with the cuffs still attached to his wrist, he added.

“While one of our officers chased the first one, the other suspect escaped,” the deputy chief said, adding that Mr. Roang was now being held in Prey Sar prison.
