The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday charged a woman and her husband for embezzling more than $370,000 from the property development company where she worked as an accountant, a lawyer said.
Phat Chakrya, 28, and her husband, Hoa Kosal, 30, were arrested on Friday on suspicion that they pocketed large sums of money from the company, Borey Piphup Thmey, instead of paying the firm’s vendors since September, said Pek Vannak, a lawyer for the firm.
“We knew on the 18th when one of our partner companies—the sellers of construction materials—came to claim their money,” Mr. Vannak said. “At that time, we started to wonder why our company owed money to the customers, because generally we gave the money to accounting and accounting sent a report stating everything had been settled already,” he said.
In total, the pair stand accused of stealing $373,481, he said. The two were detained in Prey Sar prison after being charged, he added.
