The opposition CNRP says its lurching attempts to start its own television station in the country will continue today with a meeting with Phnom Penh municipal officials to discuss plans to build an antenna in the city.
CNRP spokesman Yem Ponhearith said the party, which intended to build an antenna in Kandal province’s Takhmao City but had those plans shot down due to supposed public health concerns, has secured a new plot of land in Phnom Penh, though he declined to say where.
“We prepared documents already and we will go to meet with City Hall tomorrow,” Mr. Ponhearith said on Tuesday after meeting with Cults and Religion Minister Him Chhem at the National Assembly.
“If the authorities allow it, I think that we will con- struct the antenna faster.” The spokesman said the CNRP had received $700,000 in donations for Sun TV, which would be the first opposition-aligned terrestrial TV station, but needed about $1 million to begin operations.
Mr. Ponhearith declined to say when the station might launch if authorities gave the new location a green light.
