CNRP Lawmakers Visit Prisoners for New Year

Five opposition lawmakers visited jailed party activists and former officials at Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar prison on Tuesday to offer emotional support and wish them a happy new year, according to Ho Vann, one of those who visited.

The trip lasted for more than an hour and included talks with Hong Sok Hour, Um Sam An and Meach Sovannara, all of whom resigned from their posts as opposition officials in February following the passage of a controversial law that could see the CNRP dissolved if its top members are convicted of crimes.

They said they can put up with [imprisonment], and called for all activists to work together in order to get a good result” for the CNRP in upcoming commune and national elections, Mr. Vann said.

He said the party would try to push for the prisoners’ release through every means possible, including talks with the ruling CPP, in order to create a “good environment before the upcoming elections.”

CPP spokesman Sok Eysan said any decision about discussions with the opposition “depends on the leadership of the [CPP].”
