A CNRP youth leader in Siem Reap province was questioned in court on Tuesday over a Facebook post from September alleging illegal voter registration of Vietnamese people, sparking a protest outside the courthouse.
About 200 youth gathered at the Siem Reap Provincial Court yelling for justice for the youth leader, according to CNRP and court officials.
Siek Chamnap accused Vietnamese people of illegally registering to vote in Siem Reap’s Nokor Thom commune in a post to his Facebook page on September 2.
He named one woman in particular, Chhun Pheap, alongside her photograph.
Contacted by telephone, Mr. Chamnap said Ms. Pheap was at the court on Tuesday and told him that commune authorities had pressured her to file a complaint with the court.
“I believe this complaint was filed to try to break my spirit to join political activities,” he said.
Ms. Pheap could not be reached.
Ream Chanmony, a court spokesman, said Mr. Chamnap was questioned but allowed to go home, and added that he did not know if further actions would be taken.
