China to Build Tbong Khmum Referral Hospital

The Chinese government has agreed to build a referral hospital in Tbong Khmum province, eliminating the need for locals with ailments to be transported elsewhere for treatment, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced on Tuesday.

The province has been without this public resource since its creation in June 2014, when it was carved out from Kompong Cham province.

“In the near future, the People’s Republic of China will build a big referral hospital,” Mr. Hun Sen said during an inauguration ceremony for a provincial administrative building and government dorms.

“I raised my proposal, requesting that Chinese President Xi Jinping help build a hospital for our people to get treatment here, as we have previously transported patients for treatment.”

He did not give the cost of the hospital project.

The administrative buildings were being erected next to heritage tourism sites, which he hoped people would come to visit, Mr. Hun Sen said.

The premier also appealed to developers to consider the province for future development.

“Rich people can build hotels around this area,” he said.
