Cambodian, Thai Officials Investigate Casino Murder

Police in Battambang province have asked Thai officials for help in finding a woman suspected of robbing and strangling a Thai woman with a scarf in her casino hotel room, officials said on Wednesday.

Housekeepers at the Franasie casino in Kamrieng district found the body of 43-year-old Thai national Mony Chhai Buth on Tuesday, said Phet Sophan, police chief of Boeng Raing commune.

“The victim was strangled by a scarf. It could have been a robbery. All her possessions, jewelry, were gone,” Mr. Sophan said.

By the time casino staff alerted police “after seeing the victim lying dead on her bed,” the suspected killer had fled, he said.

A review of the venue’s video surveillance showed two women who had been gambling in the casino earlier in the night entering the room at about 2 a.m., but only one woman was seen leaving, provincial police chief Sar Thet said.

Mr. Thet said Cambodian authorities suspect the killer is a Thai national, and have contacted Thai police to assist in the investigation.
