Cambodia picked up another gold in petanque on Sunday in the sport’s world championships held this year in Madagascar, earning $30,000 in prize money.
Sok Chanmean, 34, beat Frenchman Bruno Le Boursicaud 36 to 29, according to the International Federation of Petanque and Jeu Provincal website.
Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said Mr. Chanmean also won 120 million riel, or about $30,000, in prize money and that he would be met with a motorcade of 12 motorcycles at Phnom Penh International Airport upon his return on Wednesday.
Mr. Chamroeun hoped the success would be a sign of things to come when Cambodia hosts the SEA Games for the first time in 2023.
“It is a goal and a good sign for 2023 when Cambodia is supposed to be the host country of the SEA Games,” he said.
This is just the latest international success for Cambodia in the sport, also known as boules, after Ke Leng, the country’s top female player, won the world championships in 2013 and 2014.
