Bodybuilder Wins First in Regional Championships

Four Cambodian bodybuilders won medals at the 13th Southeast Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports championship in Thailand during the past week, with the reigning Mr. Angkor, Tek Bunvy, taking home a gold.

The 44-year-old accountant was competing in the 175 cm athletic physique category, and was the favorite to win after the prejudging round, said Sokmongkol Rasmey, president of the Cambodian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation.

“The quality of competition was relatively high this year,” he said of the event, which ended on Friday. “But everyone is in great form, and it was no surprise we managed to get four awards.”

In addition to Mr. Bunvy, Trin Chan placed third and Nom Sobin and Chab Vanny fourth in their respective categories, a vast improvement from the last championships in Singapore in 2014, when no Cambodians won medals.

However, support from the government has still been lacking, Mr. Rasmey said, with official recognition—and basic materials like team tracksuits—still lacking.

“But I hope these successes further increase our profile, and people’s awareness of the Cambodian team,” he said.
