A Chinese investment company is planning to build a $21.8 million cultural park near Angkor Wat, according to a report in Chinese media, although the authority responsible for the world heritage site said on Sunday it had not been approached about the project.
Yunnan Cultural Industry Investment Holdings Group proposed the idea after the success of the Smile of Angkor, a dinner and dance show about the ancient civilization in which it had invested, said Yang Jinsong, assistant general manager of the company, according to a report Saturday in the China Daily.
Chau Sun Kerya, spokeswoman for the Apsara Authority, the government body that oversees Angkor Archaeological Park, said on Sunday: “I only heard the rumor, but the Apsara Authority hasn’t received anything.”
Spread over 2 hectares, the Chinese project would include a 1,200-seat theater, exhibition center and museum on the history of Sino-Cambodian friendship, the report said.
