Six Arrested in Cockfighting Crackdown in Kampot

Military police in Kampot province shut down a cockfighting ring on Wednesday and arrested six gamblers after locals complained, an official said on Thursday.

Hem Channara, deputy provincial military police commander, said the gamblers were arrested as soon as authorities arrived at the ring in Toek Chhou district’s Kounsat commune.

Three roosters and 10 motorbikes were also confiscated during the raid, which was ordered after district military police received complaints about the ring from locals, he said.

“We went there and we saw about 20 people sitting and standing around the ring,” he said. “We arrested six people and the other people ran away into a nearby forest.”

Five of the six brought in for questioning at the military police headquarters were released later that afternoon after signing contracts agreeing to stop such gambling, Mr. Channara said.

The ring’s organizer, Dan Sunny, 30, was sent to the provincial court but was released on Thursday after signing a contract with the court’s deputy prosecutor promising to stop hosting cockfighting matches on her premises, he said.
