Appeal Court to Hear ‘Insurrection’ Case Next Month

Eleven opposition activists who have been jailed since 2014 for supposedly participating in an “insurrection” will have their appeal against their conviction heard on March 17, their lawyer said on Friday.

The activists were convicted in July last year over their roles in a July 2014 demonstration at Freedom Park in Phnom Penh during which a brawl broke out between protesters and government security guards.

They were handed sentences of between seven and 20 years, which human rights groups decried as politically motivated and out of proportion to the offenses.

“The Court of Appeal will try Meach Sovannara and 10 other defendants on March 17, 2016, and I will be in the courtroom to defend my clients,” Choung Choungy said.

He added that another of his clients, opposition Senator Hong Sok Hour, would have his request for bail heard by the Supreme Court on February 26.

The senator has been in prison since August for his involvement in presenting a fake border treaty in a video posted to Facebook.
